The Vancouver’s Downtown Association Places & Spaces Grant Program provides resources to merchants and property owners to invest in outdoor seating, activation, and placemaking improvements.
This program is designed to enhance the public realm while helping businesses expand into outdoor spaces, creating a more vibrant and cohesive downtown experience.
Due to the competitive nature of this program, Vancouver’s Downtown Association investors receive priority consideration and are eligible for higher funding amounts. Businesses interested in maximizing their eligibility are encouraged to become VDA investors. Learn more here.

Program FAQ
1) What is the purpose of the program?
The VDA's Places & Spaces Grant Program supports the economic vitality of downtown businesses and the beautification of the district by supporting outdoor seating, activation, placemaking, and vibrant street-level experiences.
2) Who is eligible to apply?
Businesses or properties located within Downtown Vancouver may apply. Priority is given to businesses on Main Street and adjacent arterials, with additional priority consideration for Vancouver’s Downtown Association investors.
3) How do I apply?
Applications are submitted online and reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. We recommend reviewing the program information packet prior to applying.
4) What do I need to include?
Applicants should include a project description, cost estimates, and photos or links of proposed furnishings or materials. Permits, approvals, and property owner authorization may be required.
5) How does funding work?
This is a reimbursement-based grant covering up to 80% of approved project costs.
VDA Investors: up to $1,500
Non-Investors: up to $750
Match: minimum 20% required
Complete the project, submit receipts and a final report, and receive payment within approximately 60 days.
6) Design guidance
Use durable, high-quality materials that complement downtown character. Maintain cohesive design, ADA access, and clear pathways. Avoid low-quality, temporary, or highly plastic materials.
Examples include: tables and chairs, benches, lighting, planters, public art, and other outdoor furnishings that enhance customer space.
